There are 5 or 6 operators that do these tours and they all seem to have same equipment, same prices and same schedule. Island Kayaking Adventure is one of them, I guess as good as any. Everything was well organized, on time, guides were informative, friendly and very helpful. My wife and second kid were having troubles paddling their kayak so one of the guides hooked them up to his boat and pretty much dragged them in and out all the way, which was great help. I strongly recommend the first tour so at least you have some light on your way in and don't have to bump into other boats that go in opposite direction. Return can be spooky for small kids because by then you would be paddling in almost complete darkness and bumping into trees branches and other boats. But considering how amazing this glowing water is - it's totally worth the money and effort. read less

Yes, it was about 16 kayaks in one group and channel to the bay is pretty narrow but it didn't ruin our experience at all. The bay itself is pretty big and there is enough space for 5-6 big groups (or even more). Our guide gave us interesting info about the bay and why plankton is glowing. The night was pretty bright, moon was out. But they had а canopy to cover kayaks and we could see luminescence fine. Very unusual and cool. read less

Our experience with the BioBay was a mixed bag. Here are the details.
We were booked for the 8:30 PM tour. We already knew that we were going there in pretty much the full moon and there was very little expectation of actually seeing anything spectacular. Our only saving grace could be that there were clouds. Well it was only partially cloudy that night. We still wanted to go just for the experience.
The morning of the excursion, I got a call from Island Adventures, telling me that the luminescence levels are a little low due to weather and moon conditions, but still decent enough, but they still give us an option to cancel for full refund, or continue as planned for an additional 15% discount in price. I took the later option, as we wanted the experience anyway. (I thought it was nice of them to give us those options.)
We were a large group of friends so all we were looking for was just having some fun with a bunch of friends. Where else would you ever get a chance to Kayak in the middle of night, through dark and spooky mangroves, in full moon? May be never.
We reached the given address around 8 PM. Everything was very well organized. We were given our instructions, and the gear. We got into our kayaks, and started rowing. Most of use were in-experienced. Initially we tried to paddle our way through the winding narrow path through the mangroves, but it was very quickly clear that we needed help. So our 4 guides tied our kayaks together in groups and each guide dragged us through the waters.
The mangroves were very spooky and mesmerizing. It was almost dark, with moon light filtering through the trees. We were paddling through a narrow path between the trees, with branches / roots hanging. All the adults and kids were having a blast. Just that part of the excursion was worth the money.
After more than half an hour of rowing, we reached the open waters. We gathered in a group, were given tarps to put on our heads, (as there was too much light) and that's when we saw the bio luminescence.
So it is not like a laser show, or glowing basin like you would see in a movie like Avatar. It is just a very tiny amount of bright dots in water when you shake the water vigorously. That's all. It was good, but nothing spectacular.
Maybe if there was no moon, and the temperature and other conditions were better, we could have seen more. But we already knew that, so there was not a ton of disappointment.
Our tour guides were very professional. They stayed on top of things all along. They pulled us most of the way to the open waters, and all the way back to the shore. We had one kayak flip, (which provided the necessary entertainment for the rest of us 🙂 ) but it was quickly rectified.
Overall I still give it a rating of 4, for the professionalism of the crew, for the awesome night kayaking, and for all the fun we had and not so much for the little dots of light that we actually came to see. read lessHamayon M6/27/2021Awesome but ad is misleading One of the most interesting things I have ever experienced. But we enjoyed kayaking in the dark and the little flecks of luminescence we could see were fun. The tour guides were all personable and knowledgeable and wanted us to learn and enjoy. There were a few inexperienced kayakers who made it more entertaining for those of us who had done it before. The tour guides tried hard to accommodate different skill levels and kept things as organized as possible for 30 people on 15 kayaks. We thought it was a fun adventure and the bioluminescence was a bonus! Would recommend! read less

The visual bioluminescent effect is stunning. You just want to keep putting your hands in the water to see the effect over and over again.
Paddling back was a little bit more of a challenge. It is pitch black and your paddles will inadvertently pick up sea weed and drop it on you, making you believe it is something else entirely. But not to worry, it is very safe. The guides all have flash lights and will shine a light on whatever raises a concern.
The only derogatory point I can make is not against this outfit, but rather against another provider that offers the tour on a powered boat. Having to make room for these glass bottom boats was a pain. Besides, nothing beats a hand on experience. read lessHanni W6/11/2015Family adventure We booked this adventure and was my first time in this place and kayaking a ton night, we had so much fun and we learned about it too. Everyone has been talking about it with awe and excitement since! There were a few who had never kayaked before, and they were shown extra care and attention and were so proud they concurred fears and had the opportunity to experience overcoming fears with someone by their side. The bioluminescent bay was exciting to see and looked like glitter and sparks in the water. It was interesting to hear about the impact of hurricane Maria and the effects on the bioluminescent bay plankton.
For those looking for details: yes you get wet from waist down. Bring a towel and change of clothes. If you go at sunset, bring bug spray - we used bug spray and no one came away with bites. We went two days after a new moon, so we could definitely see the bioluminescence even without the tarp, but being under the tarp made it even brighter, of course. I know that the majority of people go there for the bioluminescence, but the nighttime kayak through the mangroves was a unique experience as well. Highly recommend! They give you mosquito repellent, but just in case, bring some; mangroves as full of mosquitoes. Since you have to walk in the water to get to and from the kayak, I recommend bringing a change of clothes to change after the tour. They have showers and bathrooms available that were very useful to prepare for the hourlong trip back to San Juan. read less

I did not plan ahead and found Island Kayaking through the resort concierge. The first few places I called were booked up but Island Kayaking still had a few openings the week we were there. Called up, booked it and they confirmed everything by text and included explicit directions on how to get there (you will need them...it is not easy to find). Once we arrived, we were checked in quickly by the friendly staff. They recommended that we not take anything with us like phones, cameras, etc...and they would hold our stuff for us (I was a bit weary but it worked out fine). They were right to recommend that we not bring anything because we got soaked.
The guides were great and led us out. We were a group of 15 two person kayaks and they take you across a bay and through dark and curvy channels that look like they are out of Jurassic Park. It is pitch dark other than some moonlight which makes it really fun. You kayak for about 30 minutes or so until you reach another bay, the Bio Bay. They gather you in a group and give you a brief overview and then let you explore around for about 20 minutes. We had a full moon night which is not the best night to do it apparently but you could still see the water light up just when you put your oar in the water. Then they lead you back the way you came. The Bio Bay is really fun and interesting but the big surprise was just the nighttime kayaking through the dark channels. All of our kids loved it!! And the kayaking is very easy and not tiring at all even though you are paddling for over an hour.
When you return to shore, they greet you with water and snacks. They take pictures which they post free of charge on Facebook two days later.

We got the second shift and so it was already dark as we drove to Fajardo. Streets are tough navigating and there is little to no parking in the park area. Then you have to walk around until you find a tent that might be the one you are looking for and ask. Hopefully you have a few minutes to run your wallet back to your car after you sign the waiver and pay. Leave everything in your car. They're not in a big hurry, so really it's no big deal. They do provide bug spray, but it wasn't bad our night. Remember to also stop before you get to town to go the bathroom because there is only one in the park and you have to pay. Mike was our guide who was quite enthusiastic and willing to answer all questions and was pretty knowledgeable (ALRIGHT GUYSS!). There were supposed to be a couple other guys with us and they may have gone by us during the trip, but didn't really help us stay together, just carried the tarp and camera. We seemed to get pretty spread out so that it was hard to get any directions from the front. Trip out is easier, as you can always stay to the right. Trip back in you need to stay right until you meet with an actual boat, which apparently needs to stay on that NW side and so you have to go left ("YOUR OTHER RIGHT!" they berate you from their boat). When you get close to the lagoon, it is almost better right there, still in the river, to see the bio lights in the water. We could see pretty well our night, but we still did the tent thing out in the lagoon and got pictures taken. Try to stay still so your pic is less blurry (good luck). Nice of them to post it on Facebook so it was easy to get my copy. Overall it was a good time and we all had fun for less than $50pp. read less
