Certified tour guide Amarilin Alamo and husband Néstor Martínez founded Island Kayaking Adventures (IKA) in 1998 to share with others their love for nature and Fajardo’s unique environmental characteristics, like the bioluminescent bay/lagoon (bio bay) known as Laguna Grande (Big Lagoon).
Like most family businesses, the couple started small, guiding themselves the night adventures to the bio bay. As the business grew, IKA’s fleet went up to 30 kayaks and the family began incorporating different types of adventures like diving, fishing and snorkeling along Puerto Rico’s east coast.
Over the years, they have also had the joy of welcoming a professional staff that has become part of the family.
Who are they? IKA’s kayaking adventure guides—Néstor, Abby, Gary, Julio, Miguel, Nora and Nicole —have more than 40 years of collective kayaking experience.
In addition, their combined expertise in the fields of marine biology, first aid, cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), lifeguard and swimming, allows these guides to take visitors beyond adventures, educating them about their surroundings and creating lifetime experiences they’ll never forget.
IKA’s team manages an average 600 adventures a year and has a strong commitment to providing the finest experience possible while being responsible with the environment. Our tours are certified and endorsed by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.
